What is a Clinical Psychologist?

A clinical psychologist provides comprehensive mental health care for individuals, couples, and families. Clinical psychology is a research-based practice that spans not only therapy sessions but also focuses on training and education individually as well as within the community.

This specialized area of psychology addresses behavioral, cognitive, and emotional needs as well as mild mental health challenges up to severe psychopathology. A patient will receive an assessment via diagnostic interviewing and/or psychometric testing (as needed.) The psychologist then interprets the findings and determines the best course of action.
For example, a psychodynamic approach sees human functioning as the interaction of what drives a person and the unconscious forces between different aspects of the personality. This method seeks to uncover those unconscious drives. The psychologist may use free association, dream analysis, or hypnosis to get to the root of the problem.
On the other hand, accelerated experiential-dynamic psychotherapy, or the AEDP method focuses on achieving a transformation in behavior with an in-depth exploration of stressful and traumatic experiences. Another approach is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT, in which the doctor creates a goal-oriented treatment plan to change behavioral patterns and negative ways of thinking.
